In Love Again

No, this is not about Valentine’s Day, although I did get to spend about 2 hours alone with Christian on Valentine’s Day evening to go get some dessert and peruse some books.  Thanks Nana and Grandpa!

I am in love again with The Babes.  I never really fell out of love with them, but we have had a difficult couple of weeks, and we are back on our way to the land of puppy dogs and ice cream.

It seemed like just about the time we got Rachel sleeping through the night, she decided to make up for her lack of 4 AM waking by just waking up at increasingly earlier times.  For a few nights she slept until 7 AM.  Then we started hearing her at about 6:30.  Then 6:15.  Then 6.  I’m sure you get the picture, but just in case, I’ll go on.  5:45.  5:30.  5:15.  And I’m not talking about waking up, Mommy comes to soothe and maybe feed, and baby goes back to sleep.  I’m talking baby is up – for the day.  Most times Claire was able to go back to sleep, but sometimes she would end up getting up too, and you could see in her face how sleepy she still was.

Early wake up time means cranky babies!  On those days morning play time would be filled with more crying than giggling, and it was all I could do to keep them entertained, let alone keep myself awake.  Our whole day would be thrown off with earlier nap times, shorter naps, and then a huge stretch between afternoon wake up time and bath time.  They were cranky for the majority of the day, and needless to say, I was not really enjoying my time with The Babes.

After doing some research in my extremely helpful book, “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child,” and after consulting with my twin mommy friend Vanessa, we determined that we had some exhausted babies, especially Rachel, and that putting them to bed earlier could help resolve this issue. Basically, Rachel was getting overtired during the day, and this was what was making her wake up so early, and it was also contributing to her shorter naps. She was so tired she couldn’t sleep well.

Tired, Cranky Rachel

It sounds strange, but putting them to bed earlier actually helps them sleep later. So off we were to a 6:30 bed time, as opposed to our normal 7.  It took us about a week, but it really seems to be paying off. Rachel still wakes sometimes in the wee hours, but is often able to put herself back to sleep.  Sometimes I have to go check on her or change her (blasted night time poopies!!!), but she usually goes back to sleep until 7 or 7:30.

So now our days are filled with fun play times, lots of laughs and smiles, and even better naps and night time sleep.  Yea!

Happy, well rested Rachel getting ready for bed.

Two smiley, not exhausted Babes!
