The best thing I never knew I needed

Dear Zoe,

We did it. We survived a year.

Oh, who are we kidding. You are a snap. Someone upstairs knew what he was doing when he sent you to us, thinking, “They’ve had enough trials dealing with those other two insane clowns. Let’s make this one a little easier.” And easier you have been. Not to mention sweet, patient, and very, very forgiving.

You…are awesome. Your smile lights up the whole house, and your giggle gives life to a million fairies (I know it’s corny. It’s from Tinker Bell. Stop laughing at me.). Your “uh-oh” gives me good reason to let you throw food on the floor.

Hugs are your specialty. You’ve got the kissiest cheeks around. Walking? You’ll get there. No big rush. Crawling is way easier, and you are dang fast at it, making a beeline for the gate if you have so much of an inkling of an idea that it’s open.

I have to tell you, I never expected I would be so in love with you. You weren’t exactly on the calendar, if you know what I mean. But we’re big believers in everything happening for a reason, and here you are. I’ve never seen a father so wrapped around his little girl’s little finger.

To quote Ne-Yo (the first time I have ever quoted Ne-Yo, and the last time I hope to ever quote Ne-Yo), “You’re the best thing I never knew I needed.” (Thank you, Princess and the Frog.)

Love,

Mommy and Daddy (you know, the people who feed, bathe, and clothe you)

P.S. You can start sleeping through the night aaaaaaaaaany day now.

P.P.S. The song accompanying the slideshow is “Junebug” by Robert Francis. Please ignore the line that says “you were beautiful then/you’re just a coke job now.” Zoe’s not snorting the blow. Maybe a milk job. But she is beautiful.

Now enjoy copious amounts of cuteness!

  1. So sweet. I love when little ones say "uh-oh" it is the cutest. My little one says it all the time and it gets her out of a lot of trouble.

  2. I was given the easy one first. Only the second one qualifies as the insane clown. I wonder if maybe the reason their fighting makes ME an insane clown is because I was an only child and never had anyone to fight with. Or have to share my toys with. Or blame for whatever mishap has mishapped?

Excellent slide show. Copious cuteness, indeed!

  3. I love that picture of Big C reading to a very happy baby Z. And what a way to finish – love crooked baby smiles. 🙂

  4. What a sweet tribute to your youngest! I wrote a similar love letter on my blog to my firstborn back in December when she turned one. And when I told you last night on Twitter to be prepared to cry today, I totally forgot you already had twins! You've clearly been through this before. And I think you might be my hero.

  5. That is so beautiful! I definitely had tears. It's amazing how fast it goes by…it seems like I was just down there right after she came home from the hospital. I can't believe it's been a year. She is absolutely adorable and you are so right…the best thing you never knew you needed…she definitely is and you are an awesome mom!! Happy 1st Birthday Zoe!! I love you!

  6. And another thing we have in common! My baby turns one in April! So close in age!
    She doesn't sleep through either.
    It goes by too fast.
