some stuff: GNO edition

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to get away for an evening with some girlfriends. Like spend the night in a hotel type of get away, courtesy of the Radisson. My friends Nicole and Kristin and I had an entire evening to roam downtown with no children in tow, which was handy, because it’s frowned upon to take children to bars. Just kidding! This is Austin. We totally saw families on Rainey Street.

Rainey Street is one of the hippest locations in town, and I’d been anxious to check it out. We stopped at Javelina for beers and shuffleboard, then walked down to Bar 96 for more beer and to get called out by the bouncer when we stated our reason for leaving was to walk over and watch the sunset behind the Congress Avenue bridge.

After dinner and gigantic pretzel at Franks Hot Dogs (yes, this IS the second time this week I have mentioned this place), we popped into the Speakeasy to check out an 80s cover band (I am officially more of a Rainey Street girl than a Speakeasy girl, judgy bouncer or not), then headed back to the Radisson. It was a lovely evening with lovely friends, that only would’ve been made better had I actually gotten a decent amount of sleep. Turns out when you are on a mostly carb-free eating plan, sharing a gigantic pretzel with friends and downing a few beers will make your heart rate go up like WHOA.

Anyway, here’s Some Stuff.

Some Stuff

I could not agree with this more.

My friend Heidi just had a hilarious piece published in the Austin Chronicle on dining out with kids. Heidi also has a very funny satirical advice column called Dear Mama.

I want to go here.

If you haven’t read it yet, Mindy Kaling’s Guide to Killer Confidence is a must.

Will I see you at the Texas Conference for Women? It’s on my birthday, which explains why they have such impressive speakers like Patricia Arquette and Robin Roberts.

ALSO, will I see you at MomCom in November? It will NOT still be my birthday, but I’m excited to hear Wendy Davis and Rabia Chaudry (who inspired the Serial podcast) speak.

In case you missed it

I wrote about my experience with breastfeeding preemie twins over on Preemie Babies 101, and the three little words that kept me going to my goal.

We celebrated Back to School in style with Zappos and the #dayofwow.

Over spring break we were invited to participate in a fun video for FastPark&Relax, an off-site parking lot near the Austin-Bergstron International Airport. Of course my children were crazy during the filming, but I am super impressed with the footage they were able to pull together.

  1. For whatever reason, I’m someone to whom people “just talk.” Heck, it’s not uncommon for a coworker, of whom I’m only partially sure of their name, will come up to me, share his/her life story, and, half of the time, end up crying in my office.

It bothers me to no end.

And yes — a sudden pump of carbs when doing “mostly carb-free” confuses all the body systems. I find that I try to counteract the heart-rate rising with copious amounts of wine.

Sadly, I will not see you at either conference 🙁

    Enjoy, though.
